Bei einer Schiesserei an einer christlichen Schule in Nashville in den USA verloren am 27. März 2023 sechs Menschen ihr Leben: drei neunjährige Kinder und drei Lehrer. Nach diesem tragischen Ereignis schrieb Brandon Heath den Song «Scars».
Der Musiker sagt dazu: «Ein Jahr lang habe ich an diesem Song gearbeitet. Es war nur vier Tage nach der tragischen Schiesserei an der Covenant School hier in Nashville, als ich ihn niederschrieb. Zu dieser Zeit war meine Kirche tief betrübt. Dieses Lied widme ich Pastor Sullivan, dem Schulpastor.
Wir trauern weiterhin, aber wir halten auch an der Hoffnung fest, dass das Leben weitergeht, selbst wenn wir Narben davontragen. Wenn wir uns an das erinnern, was Christus für uns am Kreuz getan hat, erinnern wir uns auch an seine Auferstehung und daran, dass er immer noch die Wunden in seinen Händen trägt.»
